In the summer of 1992, Joseph C. Smith accepted a supervisory position at his job. Soon after, he developed severe stress and panic attacks. Over the next five-year period Joseph saw numerous doctors, and seventeen different medications were prescribed. During this period Joseph was an inpatient at two different psychiatric hospitals with a diagnosis of major depression.
