"Love at first sight can rapidly escalate into love at first bite"
1970's Olongapo City, Philippine Islands
It was a typical evening in the wild nightclubs of Olongapo. Regrettably, I had gotten overly smashed when I was approached by Miss Lovely.
Plain and simple, for me it was love at first sight, Miss Lovely said, "I'll take you home with me tonight" I said, "Great and when do we start"!
We both hopped into a Jitney (Cab), it was a very long drive out of Olongapo City and into the countryside.
Early the next morning reality hit and like a knife. I was at least 50 to 60 miles deep into communist held territory (the Philippine Island's civil war) and there was no Jitney around to take me back to Subic Bay US Naval Station.
In a nutshell, I was in deep shit! I asked Miss Lovely what should I do, she pointed down the hill we were standing on and said, follow that dirt road.
I don't remember right now how far I walked (quite a ways) when all of a sudden behind me I heard a vehicle approaching. I looked for cover but there wasn't any on either side of this dirt road.
Whoever it was had me dead to rights and all I could do was wait.
What I saw next totally shocked me and blew me away. Keep in mind, this is the Philippine Islands in serious turmoil and civil war and I'm way out in the boonies.
I see two black guys smoking down this dirt road in an open convertible Cadillac!
The car went past me (it couldn't stop in front of me, it was going to fast) and then the driver slammed on his brakes kicking up dust everywhere.
Their both stoned and laughing like crazy and the driver yells at me, "Hey white boy, what the hell are you doing way out here in Indian country"
I tell them about Miss Lovely, they both look at each other and start laughing harder, then the driver says to me, "Hey boy, you better get in this car with us or you'll never make it back to Subic Bay alive"
These two cats were a lot older than me and what a racket they had. Both had bungalows with servants, that Cadillac (I never saw another American car while I was in PI) and woman up the ying yang.
I spent all day with these two older soldiers and had the time and lesson of my life.
You know that old saying, "black is beautiful" it is! If these two guys don't show up and then pick me up, I'm not here to tell you this true story.
The Almighty does work in mysterious ways.
And no doubt this lesson has not been lost on these folks.
It's bad luck to take someone's Higher Power website
away from them.
